Is a road e-bike right for you?

Good for

  • Keeping up on club rides or with fitter friends
  • Hilly sportives
  • Riders who want a bike that feels unassisted on the flat

Look elsewhere if

  • You want strong assistance all the time
  • Your routes include rough tracks: look at gravel e-bikes

What to look for

  • Low weight: road e-bikes often use smaller motors and batteries to stay light
  • A motor that's quiet and adds little drag when it's not helping
  • A range extender battery option for long rides

Worth knowing

  • Assistance has to stop at 15.5mph, so on fast flat roads you'll often ride under your own power: that's why low weight matters.[1]
  • A road-legal e-bike (motor no more than 250W, assistance cutting out at 15.5mph, working pedals) can go on cycle paths and anywhere else pedal bikes are allowed, but not on pavements. No licence, tax or insurance is needed, and riders must be 14 or over.[1]
  • E-bikes can be bought through Cycle to Work, which spreads the cost and saves tax and National Insurance.[2]
