Is a hybrid e-bike right for you?
Good for
- Weekend rides on towpaths and lanes, with the odd commute
- Riders who want an upright, comfortable position
- Getting back into cycling
Look elsewhere if
- You'll ride proper off-road trails: a mountain e-bike is built for it
- You want the lightest possible bike
What to look for
- Tyres wide enough for gravel paths as well as roads
- A suspension fork only if your routes are rough: it adds weight
- A wide gear range if you'll meet hills
- Mounts for a rack and mudguards, even if they're not fitted

Worth knowing
- A road-legal e-bike (motor no more than 250W, assistance cutting out at 15.5mph, working pedals) can go on cycle paths and anywhere else pedal bikes are allowed, but not on pavements. No licence, tax or insurance is needed, and riders must be 14 or over.[1]
- E-bikes can be bought through Cycle to Work, which spreads the cost and saves tax and National Insurance.[2]
