What would I save through Cycle to Work? · Compare types of e-bike

Is a cargo e-bike right for you?

Good for

  • The school run
  • Replacing car trips for shopping and errands
  • Carrying tools or stock for work

Look elsewhere if

  • You have nowhere secure and dry to keep a long, heavy bike
  • You need to take it on trains

What to look for

  • Longtail (load on the back) or front-loader (box at the front): longtails handle more like a normal bike
  • The maximum load rating, including the rider
  • Child seats and accessories that the brand approves for the bike
  • Powerful brakes and a sturdy stand for loading

Worth knowing

  • A road-legal e-bike (motor no more than 250W, assistance cutting out at 15.5mph, working pedals) can go on cycle paths and anywhere else pedal bikes are allowed, but not on pavements. No licence, tax or insurance is needed, and riders must be 14 or over.[1]
  • Cargo bikes can be bought through Cycle to Work, as the scheme covers adapted and non-standard cycles too.[2]
  • Large cycles are restricted on trains (tandems, for example, are only allowed on four companies' services), so don't plan on taking a cargo bike by train.[3]
